Summer break has arrived in full glory, already with a few sporadic rainstorms and some piping hot sunshine. This means extended traveling, internships and, for the unlucky majority, summer jobs and quality time spent with mom and dad.
To all of you little birds returning to the nest: it’s not all bad.
Sure, not all of your hometown friends will be around and that hostess job will probably lose all excitement after shift one. But at least you’re getting a break from school and attending to some old hobbies you once had before life was stuffed with studying and socializing. I was the first of my friends done with exams and after experiencing a few solo, rainy days in my hometown, I was forced to revisit a guilty pleasure: Netflix binging.

Like most college students, I’ve gotten through a respectable chunk of popular TV shows on this magical site. And when I do finally watch the last episode of “Breaking Bad,” I’ll have to look for another source of entertainment. I asked around in preparation and discovered a few underrated TV shows you may not have wasted hours watching (yet). Though some of these options are not readily available on Netflix Instant, the discs are worth ordering.
Freaks and Geeks
“Freaks and Geeks” is not the most obscure show on Netflix, as it was pretty much the first option offered from each person I asked. But hey, if you haven’t seen it, it’s about time. Both James Franco and Seth Rogan appear on this set in all 80’s high school glory. The show follows the two very different friend groups of a brother and sister attending the same high school.

Party Down
Starring Adam Scott from “Parks and Recreation,” “Party Down” is about a Los Angeles catering company founded to pay the bills for, you guessed it, a group of wannabe actors. Though the humor is sub par compared to parks and rec, Adam Scott carries the show with what’s left of his star power.
Portlandia
“Portlandia” is a special kind of strange. Fred Armisen (an SNL regular) and Carrie Brownstein play multiple roles throughout each episode based on exaggerated characters one might find in Portland, Oregon. The show is fast paced and extremely entertaining.

Sherlock
For those of you in need of a little thriller, “Sherlock” is the modern twist on the infamous detective and his sidekick, taking place in the 21st century. Though only six episodes are available so far, “Sherlock” offers that mystery intensity to keep you guessing.
Hemlock Grove
“Hemlock Grove” is one of a few “Netflix originals,” besides the popular “Arrested Development” and “House of Cards.” It’s based on a series of brutal murders that occurred in a fictional town in Pennsylvania. The terrifying cover photo alone (a hand coming out of a wolf’s mouth) kept me from giving episode one a chance, but then again I can’t even bring myself to watch “American Horror Story.”

I also encourage productivity and probably some healthier hobbies (like reading a book for once) as the key to a successful summer, but sometimes a Netflix afternoon is exactly what we exhausted college kids need. While we wait patiently for Netflix to add new seasons to our favorite shows, give these few a chance and expand your underrated horizons.
