Five Fun Films for a Perfect Valentine’s Day

It’s that time of year again; love is in the air and everyone’s catching it. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and we at GainesvilleScene have got your back! Be sure to make this day extra special by snuggling up close with your significant other and watching any one of these quintessential (sometimes hopelessly cheesy) emotionally-charged films.

Via: Cinema

“Dancer in the Dark”:

Experience award-winning pop artist Björk like you’ve never seen her before, in a leading role from a film that broke box office records and made millions. “Dancer in the Dark” captures the innocence of an immigrant and her sons striving in the land of opportunity, i.e. our beautiful (and bountiful!) America. Together they endure constant challenges and eventually grow ever closer as a family. Internationally renowned filmmaker Lars Von Trier intercuts much of this intimate, interpersonal family fun with energetic song and dance numbers that’ll leave you tapping your toes and begging for more.

“The Plague Dogs”:

A lab named Rowf and a terrier called Snitter leave a research facility in England to find a new home. They meet a colorful cast along the way (including a very witty fox named ‘The Tod’) and their playful banter and mischievous endeavors will definitely make you howl with delight. This is an animated film you won’t want to miss!

“Revolutionary Road”:

Everyone loves a good ‘50s flick. Although this film isn’t technically from the golden era of movie-making (Sam Mendes shot it in 2008) the cinematographer Roger Deakins catches that doo-wop feel-good essence perfectly. Everything about this movie screams romance: from the first time the lovebirds kiss to their first adorable squabble. “Revolutionary Road” is a tremendously endearing flick and it is definitely a go-to, especially if you’re looking to discuss long-term relations with your significant other.

“Requiem for a Dream”:

What would you do for love? In the case of this ensemble piece, just about anything! “Requiem for a Dream” leads an all-star cast (Chas Mastin, Joanne Gordon) and follows the story of Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), a guy that’s really down on his luck. But he and his best friend Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans) have come up with a foolproof plan to help out his drab, fashion designer girlfriend and sad ol’ shut-in mother. Their misadventures could get them in a little trouble, but isn’t love always worth the risk?

“Schindler’s List”:

If you loved E.T and the Indiana Jones series, you’ll love Schindler’s List! Set in Poland during World War II, this movie perfectly encapsulates the passion and endurance of civilians facing some of the toughest times of their lives. Liam Neelson delivers an immaculate performance as Oskar Schindler, a tough guy who turns into a total softie after seeing his brothers and sisters living (and sometimes dying) in squalor. He leaves his love of business to pursue a greater good; saving the lives of the innocent. Schindler even goes as far as to persuade SS guards to “return to their families as men, not murders.” Talk about a saint! With a movie about love this strong what’s not to like?

There you have it, folks. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day filled with hyped up expectations that never deliver. It can be simple. Sit on the couch with your S.O., turn on one of these films and allow the romance to flow freely and naturally through you (as it’s bound to do; these films are just so damn heartwarming.)

Happy V-Day, everyone!
