The packed lunches with my zebra cakes and cute notes from my mom stopped at 12 years old. Cafeteria pizza was more appealing.
My “period candy” from my boyfriend is no longer a thing I get after 24 menstrual cycles of dating him. I guess 24 bags of Hershey kisses were taking a dent in his beer budget.
The care packages stopped coming in after my freshman fall semester. Apparently, my relatives decided I didn’t need Clif bars to study anymore.
But here’s the deal: I need all these things. I’m not functioning as well in adulthood without my free lip smackers and gummy bears.
R.I.P. Dr. Pepper lip balm because I’ll never buy you for the sheer privilege that you used to be handed to me.
I think the element of surprise is lacking in my life and it’s seriously cramping my style. I like surprises.

I’ve done some shady thinking and even thought about handing my boyfriend my debit card with the instructions to go out and buy me fun things. That’s it. Just something I can preferably digest.
I also thought about sending myself a care package from the Popcorn Factory, but I already know what I’m going to get. So, the element of surprise is still nonexistent.
Behold the genius concept of subscription boxes. The idea is that you subscribe to get a box full of goodies shipped to your house every month. Each month is all new products and food that the company handpicks.
The surprise: you have no say in what they’re sending you and you don’t know what you’re getting until it arrives at your house.
There are several different markets for these subscription boxes. There are companies that create themed boxes ranging from crafting to fitness to cocktails.
The best-reviewed boxes on the Internet are:
Try the World — Each box ordered is themed a different country with delicacies and products handpicked from the locals.
Birchbox — Take a beauty quiz on your skin and hair type and the experts will send you deluxe, trial size, high-end beauty products that fit you.

Goodebox — A box full of trial-sized organic and natural beauty products for the eco-friendly ladies.
Conscious Box – A box full of organic and healthy snacks and products ranging from beauty to cleaning.
Bro Box – For all things “bro;” this box has healthy snacks, the latest in men’s fashion accessories and you can always count on the monthly supply of protein powder (no, I’m not kidding).
PopSugar’s Must Have — Probably the most coveted of all subscription boxes. The style and life editors at PopSugar pick out the most popular and luxurious products on the market for women each month. Each box is supposed to be valued at over $100 for the bargain price of $30 a month.

Club W — As promised, this is a box that sends you three bottles of wine per month to broaden your juice-loving palettes.
Whimseybox – For the whimsical soul. Just kidding. This box is for those who love to get straight up crafty. Each month, Whimseybox sends you a DIY craft with directions, so you cant eff it up.
I started off my week by subscribing to Birchbox and Conscious Box because I need mystery back in my life.
It’s going to feel like Christmas twice a month up in this household. I highly recommend subscribing if you enjoy surprises or feel like no one cares about you. Because then you can pay a company to pretend to care about you by sending you cool things and that’s equally as satisfying.
