Midtown getting old? Interested in hearing the sweet stylings of a husband-and-wife folk duo on a Friday night?
Then look no further than Adam & I, a Nashville-based group playing at The Jones B-Side on Friday.
I got a chance to catch up with Adam Melia, the husband half of the band, to learn a little bit about their musical journey.
Adam and Andrea Melia met 10 years ago playing music at a church in Phoenix. The two began both a musical and romantic relationship that lead to marriage three years ago and a move to Nashville a year and a half back. After years of playing around Phoenix, the couple figured they might as well do something together.
The duo’s style benefits from the different musical backgrounds each comes from. Adam’s infatuation with music began early on listening to The Beatles, Elvis and other “older stuff.” He began writing songs in high school and played in a variety of bands. In contrast, Andrea is a classically trained musician. Adam said with the two of them working together, their sound is able to meet somewhere in the middle.
Since moving to Nashville, the two have realized the massive amount of music talent that exists in the city, but Adam said the two of them thrive on the challenge and difficulty of being a musician, tackling the industry with a blue-collar work ethic and embracing the “Do It Yourself” mentality of singer/songwriters.
“We have the most respect for bands that lived out of their cars and just made it happen,” Adam said.
With an album just released (check out their self-titled debut on their website), the goal for 2014 is to be on the road as much as possible. Generally playing in Nashville, Knoxville and the D.C. area, the group is making their second trip to Gainesville, having played at local environmental film festival Cinema Verde in February.
“Everybody was really cool in Gainesville,” Adam remarked.
And with that vote of confidence for this great city, come out and see this talented tandem on Friday night.
