Our favorite solo musical powerhouse is returning to town with his remarkably soulful sounds and charismatic presence. Organic Vision Presents has gifted Gainesville with two sets of Zach Deputy this Thursday night at The JAM.
Zach Deputy truly is a one-man band. He shares the stage with an assortment of instruments, including a guitar, keyboard and steel drums. While Deputy will be the only human being you see on the stage, the performance will emanate a full band effect via a technique he uses called live looping — the process of using technology to layer multiple musical outlets into one sweet melody. Live looping allows for a sound that embodies all of Zach D’s undeniable talents.

Apart from his skills with a guitar, Deputy is a luminous songwriter and soulful singer with a rare 4+ octave range that will prompt double and triple takes to the large man on stage. The Zach Deputy sound is a rhythmic compilation of soul, calypso and dance hall, underpinned by dynamic hip-hop, rocks steady, Motown and Stax backbeats all built upon a roots rock base. The keyboard, drums, plucking of nylon strings that serves as bass and lead guitar, as well as an entire horn section ride on top of the backbeats. The result is magical.
The Zach Deputy live experience is that of no other, and is so much more than just a performance. The crowd can expect seamless transitions from being immersed in a full-blown dance party to finding themselves caught in the midst of a heart-melting love ballad. He will also be found before and after his sets mingling in the crowd and giving out the best bear hug you will ever receive. Seriously, find this man on Thursday and give him a hug. You’ll see what we mean.

His cover of Elvis Presley’s “Teddy Bear” fully depicts his humble and huggable disposition. Ironically enough, Deputy performed in a fuzzy bear onesie during his performance at Bear Creek 2014 in November.
The JAM’s intimate setting makes it the ideal venue, other than Suwannee, where Deputy is widely-known as the “king/Santa of Bear Creek,” to experience a Zach D performance. The event will feature two Zach Deputy sets, as well as a performance by Gainesville’s own soulful funk pop band Flat Land and an acoustic set by Andrew Fagin and Billy Shmucker.
Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets are still available here.
