Love on Topshop

First, Alexander Wang announced his partnership with H&M. The Creative Director of Balenciaga will release a sportswear collection with the affordable retailer in November. From pictures release in mid-October, the bold WANG brand and his signature variations of gray and black. The fashion world exploded.

What could possibly be next, Beyoncé partnering with Topshop? Well…yes.

I can already hear the puns now: the outfits will be Flawless, you’ll be Crazy in Love of her clothes and it’s perfect for all the Single Ladies.

The R&B/hip-hop diva is going into a 50-50 partnership with Topshop, a British retailer that does contain a U.S. shop, according to Vogue. Unlike Wang however, Beyoncé isn’t just releasing a collection. Her label has yet to be named, but will include dance and fitness style shoes, clothes and accessories. Labeled as streetwear and activewear, it seems as if the athletic style will be the biggest trend of the next year.

“Working with its development team to create and produce a technical and fashion-led collection is exciting, and I’m looking forward to participating in all aspects of this partnership,” Beyoncé said of the partnership to Vogue.

For those new to the retailer, Topshop is an affordable, modern, ready-to-wear shop that operates out of the U.K. From simple silhouettes to intricate runway designs, prices can range from $15 for a dress to $675. Mrs. Carter would be tapping into a trend dubbed “athleisure,” which would create fashionable athletic wear, a niche market that no one has really cashed in on yet.

The owner of Arcadia—which operates Topshop—Philip Green was clear to refer to the venture with the singer as a “partnership,” when speaking to Vogue. He was keen on separating it from “other high-profile” collaborations. While it’s true that Beyoncé could definitely get a partnership going with more established department stores like Macy’s or H&M, it is unlikely that she’d get the same 50-50 deal she will have with Topshop because those established places have shareholders to answer to, while Topshop does not.

This isn’t the first high-profile “partnership” Topshop has entered into, though. Designing duo Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida brought their grunge and frayed denim 90s style to the store in early October.

Despite the news breaking on this partnership, it is not yet apparent the price range in which Beyoncé’s label will fall. Currently, no numbers have been released, but I’m not sure it matters. For members of the Beehive, Beyoncé’s fan base (and the word “fan” is an understatement), I don’t think there is a price that can be attached with something of which their favorite star is a part.

If she puts out a long-sleeved leotard (hey, single ladies), it will sell no matter how much Topshop charges. Celebrities have crazy power over those who adore them, and The Queen herself is no exception, hell, she might even be the rule.

Just turn on your favorite song, Beehive members and fans. Soon, you can be “Sasha Fierce” too or at least, you can dress like her.
