Uber has reached Gainesville. Pause for a moment and think to yourself what this means.
Did you take a moment? Did you really think about what this means? Okay, good. Let’s discuss.
Uber is a ride-sharing service that operates entirely through an app. You order your ride, track your driver, pay and even review drivers all through the app. Uber claims to be 56 percent cheaper than a normal cab. If you fiddle around with the Fare Quote feature, you’ll find that’s mostly true.
So, what does this mean for us Gainesvillians?
Any time you’ve been stuck anywhere, you now have an inexpensive ride at your finger tips. Gone are the days of calling a cab, not knowing when it will actually show up or how sketchy the ride back will be. You can now make amends with the friend you no longer talk to because he reamed you out in front of Pizza by the Slice when you made him DD too often. Freshmen, you no longer have to awkwardly ride the bus when you take a Jennings babe out to Dragonfly.
Gainesville’s cab companies have long been overcharging us to get home when we stay out just a little too late – what’s with that 2 a.m. law? — and especially on game days, but guess what? (“What?” your inner monologue just asked.) Your first five rides are free.
Free? Yes, free. As in, you don’t pay anything.
Take Uber to the game. Take Uber downtown. Take Uber to Midtown. Take Uber to Toys ‘R’ Us. Just have Uber drive you in circles because you can. (Don’t actually do that, it’s a dick move.)
Whether you’re carless, planning on getting too shitfaced to drive or would rather not roll up in your swagged out 2001 Honda Odyssey, Uber is going to change the transportation game in Gainesville.
