Unless you’ve completely avoided the Internet, television or the movies this summer, you’ve probably heard of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” In its opening weekend, it grossed nearly $94 million dollars, and it’s only going to keep growing from there.
It’s Marvel’s latest film about a group of rag-tag people trying to save the galaxy from utter destruction. The plot had the potential to repeat that of another famous Marvel group, but James Gunn’s story of this group of species-diverse misfits is miles away from Joss Whedon’s 2011 “Avengers.”
Five minutes into “Guardians,” I knew I was in for an original entertainment experience. We follow Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord into a deserted planet called Morag. He makes his way into this Indiana Jones type of cave on his way to steal something kept deep inside. He takes out a Walkman and begins to play a wonderfully catchy ‘80s song “Come and Get Your Love.” Instead of doing some type of weird mixed martial arts meets gymnastic choreography to get to the orb he’s been commissioned to steal, he instead dances his way through the cavern.
You wouldn’t catch Captain America or Thor dancing their way into anything.

Secondly, I appreciate that the Guardians isn’t really a group of heroes at all. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that they are anti-heroes. The group consists of a master assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), two thieves (Rocket, a talking raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper and Groot, a giant tree alien voiced by Vin Diesel), a warrior known as Drax the Destroyer (Dave Batista), and of course the “leader” of the group Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), who is also contract thief.
They don’t have the ethos typical of most superhero groups, and I think that sets them apart, as well. The film begins with each of them on dishonorable and/or selfish paths that allow them to survive but never really gets them anything beyond that.
I won’t spoil it for you, but the way that these heroes band together by the end of the film will tug at your heartstrings as you earnestly root for them until the very last minute.

Packed with outrageously funny circumstances and music that is non-traditional for this kind of film, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is one of the must-see movies this summer. It presents typical superhero tropes with unlikely heroes and humor that will make you wish you were a part of their gang.
