UF Pops Guinness World Record

On Tuesday, February 25, the University of Florida broke the Guinness World record for the most people popping bubble wrap, simultaneously, in exactly two minutes.

The event was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Reitz Union and supplied bubble wrap to 400 participants.

The former Guinness World Record for the most bubble wrap popped at one time was recorded last year when 366 Hawthorn High School students in New Jersey teamed up with Sealed Air Corporation, the manufacturers of Bubble Wrap brand cushioning, for a packaging popping escapade. Exactly 366 students assembled in the Hawthorne High School gym in celebration of Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (yes, a real holiday) and a world record-breaking moment.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of University of Florida students up for the challenge flocked to the second floor Grand Ballroom of the Wayne Reitz Union in attempt to clench the record. A UF Bateman campaign named “What’s Your Popping Point?” presented the event and collaborated with Student Government in gathering a total of 367 people to participate in the popping frenzy.

The Bateman campaign creatively used the bubble-popping event to advertise a new person-to-person payment service wittingly named, Popmoney.

The Guinness Book of World Records is widely known particularly for bringing together thousands of the world’s most remarkably bizarre people, animals, events and more. The Guinness volumes encompass the records made each year, and the Gator Nation aimed to secure a future spot in the legendary book.

In the last few seconds of the two-minute timer you could feel an overwhelming sensation of agonizing anticipation fill the room.

After two minutes of popping more than 8,000 square feet of bubble wrap donated by both students and UF Health Shands Hospital, the timer finally sounded and the ballroom erupted in cosmic celebration. An applauding wave of cheers and whistles echoed the ballroom and was quickly followed by hundreds of high fives in excitement for UF’s new record-breaking mark in history.

Who knew that popping bubble wrap, a treasured and impossible to resist pastime, would put The University of Florida in the Guinness World Records? Once again, the Gator Nation proves that it’s always up for the challenge.
