Tonight The Florida Theater will be hosting one of dubstep’s founding fathers and a self proclaimed Seinfeld bass player/crystal maze winner/darts pro. He’s a professional that goes by the name of Rusko and his speciality is “dirty, wobbly dubstep”.
Christopher Mercer, more commonly known as Rusko, ambushed the scene back in 2006. Right from the start he secured his status as one of the pioneers of dubstep, having had a direct hand in shaping what we all know and love about the genre.
Now I’ll be honest when I say that I consider myself a music festival and concert junkie, so I’ve seen a solid amount of shows. Somehow Rusko has long remained on my list of “I’m not sure why I haven’t yet, but I better see them pretty damn soon” artists.Tonight I finally get my chance to check him off the list. Whether Rusko is one of the first DJs who’s music you dabbled with back in high school, or just someone who sounds like they would put on a good time (he’s known for playing in socks for more efficient dancing and sliding), his show will be one that you absolutely can’t miss.
Here’s four quick reasons why Rusko will be the most massive show this semester:

1.) He’s still high off TomorrowWorld:
During the three day festival last week my Instagram feed was almost nothing but video clips, pictures of my friends casually hanging VIP side with DJs (I still kind of hate you all), and scenes of the beautiful Chattahoochee Hills. Rusko’s name kept making a reoccurring appearance and it was the same deal on my Twitter feed. It immediately became obvious from what I saw, read, and heard that the guy had one of the best sets at the festival. Considering the killer and massive lineup that’s really saying something about the bass aficionado’s performance.
2.) Gainesville is fresh on his Lift Me Up Tour:
We can confidently assume that Rusko took his momentum from TomorrowWorld into the kickoff of his Lift Me Up Tour, which started on October 4th in Santa Ana, CA. Gainesville, of all places, is the second stop on his nonstop tour. When I say nonstop, I literally mean nonstop. For every night in October Rusko will find himself in a new city putting on a show. What does this mean for Gainesville? The Florida Theater can only expect to be rocked by the heavy bass that Rusko has been waiting to deliver.
3.) His tour production though…
Most shows that I’ve seen in Gainesville haven’t been apart of the artist’s official tour, so the show usually has more of an impromptu vibe. Since the show on Monday is part of Rusko’s full blown tour we are guaranteed to experience his trademark production. You can expect to see massive, Hollywood-esque letters that spell out Rusko and a crazy light show. It’s an awesome backdrop for Rusko’s quirky stage presence, heavy beats, and contagious energy. Oh, and the Florida Theater is hands down my favorite venue in Gainesville (Matisyahu last fall? It redefined unforgettable). There’s tons of room for everyone to comfortably break it down, grab a drink, or take five to cool off before braving the crowd again. The Florida Theater is ready.
4.) C’mon guys, you saw this coming…HIS MUSIC
I’m really not the most intense dubstep fan, but I do love me some Rusko. He delivers the perfect amount of heavy bass without the messiness of some typical dubstep. Before the show I suggest checking out and/or reminding yourself of the greatness of these notable tracks:
-Cockney Thug
-Got Da Groove (feat. Gucci Mane)
-Woo Boost
There you have it, my four convincing and show stopping (pun intended) reasons why you have to see Rusko tonight. I know it’s LSU game day this weekend and you’re trying to “be good” this week, but this is one of those rare times when “FOMO” is a justifiable concept. Cave before it sells out and buy your ticket.
For all your purchasing needs and extra deets make your way to the official Facebook event page. I’ll catch ya guys near the stage.
