I settled down at my desk at 2:30 p.m. and nervously punched the number into my cell phone. After a few short rings, Jason Huber and Jordan Kelley, the dynamic duo who make up the band Cherub, answered with a cheery “hello.” I immediately felt at ease with these two old friends and their witty back-and-forth banter left me silently giggling into the phone.
Both from Nashville, Tennessee, Jordan and Jason unleashed their music career around three years ago with the debut of their first album Mom and Dad. It’s a masterpiece of funky, happy electro-pop music with some infectious lyrics. A mixture of drugs, dancing and enjoying life is the mantra of the album, resulting in a stellar combination that makes you want to jump out of your seat and dance the night away.

“My favorite tracks to perform live are definitely from Mom and Dad. It feels really good when fans know all the words to songs that came out three years ago. People go nuts during the solo guitar part of “Love You Right.” You should have seen us at the first show. I looked like I was afraid of the microphone,” said Jordan.
So how did this talented duo find each other?
“We met at a friend’s house actually, during an intense arm wrestling match where the loser had to stick their hand in a bowl of vanilla pudding,” Jordan remembered. “Jason has a surprisingly strong arm considering his scrawny size, so I lost. It was disgusting. Then he started to DJ, and I was like damn, this guy knows how to DJ.”
Jason chimed in to shed some light on the story behind the name that most fans improperly pronounce (including me).
“We were looking at a picture of a naked baby and my friend was like ‘that’s a cherub.’ It was such a random obscure word. I told myself if I ever started a band I would have to call it that.”

What I really wanted to know was how they knew they wanted to pursue a music career. In this massive, competitive university, the pressure to choose the right major is very real, but as it turns out, Jordan knew music was for him since third grade.
“My mom dated this heavy metal hairdresser named Nick. He had this awesome electric guitar, and that was what got me hooked on pursuing music. Nick didn’t last too long though, my mom broke up with him and we later found out that he’d bit someone’s finger off from an article in the morning paper. She said to me, ‘honey, we’re not gonna be seeing Nick for a while.”
I asked them how they felt about the popularity of “Doses and Mimosas,” their most well known track that can be heard at just about every bar in town. They had no idea the song would be such a hit, but “every band needs that one song. It’s a great portal to get people to check our other stuff out, and we really never get tired of performing it live. There is always that one drunk bitch though screaming ‘DOSES AND MIMOSAS’ in between every song.”
I joked that at their show tonight the “drunk bitch” was probably going to be me.
Cherub’s latest album, Year of the Caprese will be released around May 27th, and they plan making a few changes to their sound.
“A lot of people just associate us with a dance genre, so this new album will introduce some new stuff. It’ll still be completely cohesive with the others but there’s much more variety. We just released “Disco Shit” and we plan to play it at the Gainesville show,” said Jordan.
Head out to The Wooly tonight at 9 p.m and see Jordan and Jason perform live, even if you’re only association with them is “Doses and Mimosas,” they still appreciate some drunken support.
