Whether you’re a brand new student, professor or researcher gearing up for your time in the Swamp or a longtime resident of the 352, the city of Gainesville is a kaleidoscope of opportunity, enjoyment and beauty (if you’re open to it, that is).
The GainesvilleScene team is constantly seeking to find what makes Gainesville, well, Gainesville. In our most recent search, we uncovered some of the quirky habits that help locals thrive.
1) Rotate local coffee shops for your studying/working. A new atmosphere, different kinds of coffee brews and unfamiliar faces will spark new creativity and keep you out of the Lib West/Marston rut. Check out a few of our favorites here.
2) Brunch. It might just be the most important meal you will eat in Gainesville. Locals can be found having leisurely feasts at quaint gems like 43rd Street Deli. If in search of the perfect hangover cure, Emiliano’s $3 mimosas are a force to be reckoned with. Brunching is a serious verb in the Gainesville vocabulary.
3) Although there’s something like 20 Publix stores in Gainesville, explore the other grocery outlets in town to find your shopping groove. Ward’s, Lucky’s, Earth Origins, Earth Fare and, of course, the local farmer’s market. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses.
4) Local people that take advantage of the nature spots in Gainesville are proven to be happier and healthier. There’s no official study, but we really, really think it’s true. Go explore what north central Florida has to offer. There are things to climb, bodies of water to jump into and serenity to be found. Here are our top natural beauty picks to get you started.
5) Buy, shop and live local. Gainesvillians recognize the importance of supporting the local economy and all the wonderful, hard working people inside of it. Skip out on the typical chain restaurants and opt for the local eats. Take a break from Buzzfeed and read your local media outlets. (MorningScene is a good starting point.) Pass on the Amazon order and grab gifts at local boutiques or craft fairs. Explore the startup scene and find out about new ventures cropping up in the 352.
6) Imbibe in different atmospheres. Let your age, taste and alcoholic preferences lead the way for nightlife. If you’re in the mood to play quarters and chug cheap beer, midtown is the move. If it’s craft cocktails and conversation you’re aiming for, head downtown. If it’s a bit of both, stroll down University Ave and explore the different vibes of Gainesville nightlife. (Don’t forget about the breweries, too!)
7) Always bring an umbrella.
