Although we love to view the world in absolutes, things are seldom black and white. Heroes have skeletons in their closets and assholes secretly donate money to the ASPCA commercials with Sarah McLachlan. Okay, maybe not.
But the point is that the world is a complex place, full of moral ambiguity, double standards and mixed feelings.
So we have taken it upon ourselves to bring back the epic binary of good versus bad, right versus wrong, and virtuous versus evil.
We humbly present you Asshole and Hero of the week.
Asshole: Valencia College
This week a lawsuit naming Valencia College came across the federal court system. The suit claims that the school violated the constitutional rights of at least two of its students by forcing them to undergo transvaginal probes in order to learn how to conduct the procedure. The exams were labeled “voluntary,” but according to the two women, their grades would have been reduced had they not complied to the probe.
Although it is a widely accepted practice to allow students of medicine to practice procedures on each other, this occurs on an explicitly voluntary basis. This is not one of those occurrences, according to the lawsuit. If it turns out that this is the truth, then what. the. fuck, Valencia.
It’s unethical to dock points of a student’s grade because they don’t want to submit to a medical procedure, a highly invasive one at that.
To add insult to injury, one of the defendants allegedly made sexually charged comments during one of the exams, undoubtedly leading to considerable discomfort for all parties involved.
Enjoy your painted parking space in Hell, Valencia.
Hero: Harman Singh
This week, a man named Harman Singh is being praised for abandoning a religious sacrament when a child was in desperate need of help after being hit by a car.
As a Sikh, Singh vowed to keep his head covered by a turban. However, when he saw a child get hit by a car, he took off the turban to help stop the bleeding from the boy’s head. Doctors say that the New Zealand boy is going to be fine, in large part due to the actions taken by Singh.
He’s being called a hero for what he’s done, though he doesn’t think himself as one. He said simply that his heart told him to help the boy, and so that’s what he did.
