College Cocktails: Margarita

Every self-respecting twenty-something should have at least one go-to cocktail recipe to whip out at a moment’s notice. Whether you’re having a few friends over or you’re just bored with your run-of-the-mill PBR, having a cocktail can spice up an otherwise monotonous evening.

When the financial aid refunds have all but dried up, going out for a night on the town can be too costly. Making your own in the comfort of your home is actually cheaper than buying it out at a bar. Plus, you get to control how strong or weak you make your drinks instead of having a bartender serve you mostly ice.

Needless to say, I’m a big fan of the homemade cocktail, which is why each week I’ll be bringing you a new drink recipe from my recipe vault (aka my brain) to try out at home. Please enjoy, and drink responsibly!

This week’s drink of the week is a summer staple: the margarita. Whether it’s served on the rocks or frozen, the margarita is a refreshing drink that mixes salty tequila with sweet fruit to create an explosion of flavors on your taste buds and a tingling sensation in your head.

What you will need:

Tequila, Triple Sec (orange liqueur), simple syrup, lime juice, ice, a shaker or blender, and salt or sugar to go around the rim of the glass.

Note: Never use pre-made mixes. They contain way too much sugar make your margaritas taste flat.

Traditional Margarita on the Rocks

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 2 oz. triple sec
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • Ice
  • Salt

Note: The amount of each liquid you choose to add to your margarita differs depending on how strong you like your drinks. I tend to add a little more tequila to my cocktails for an extra kick, but it’s a personal preference.

Method

Put ice in a shaker until it is about three quarters of the way full. Pour in tequila, triple sec, simple syrup, and lime juice. Shake well. Put water on the outside rim of a glass, and dip the top in salt. Put ice in the glass, and pour mixed drink over top of it. Serve, and enjoy.

Makes two servings

  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 2 oz. triple sec
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • ¼ cup of fruit of your choice
  • Ice
  • Sugar

Method

Fill a blender with ice until it is about three quarters of the way full. Pour in tequila, triple sec, simple syrup, lime juice, and the fruit of your choice. Pulse the mixture, and blend until frothy. Dip the top of the glass in sugar, and pour blended mixture into the glass. Serve and enjoy!

Makes three servings

There you have it. The margarita. Try it out and impress your friends with this simple recipe. The secret is that it looks more complex than it actually is.

And it tastes great.

Trust me, once you try making a margarita this way, you’ll never go back to the shitty pre-made mixes again.
