Super New Supergold: SoFLo Band Releases Single “Alligator”

Get in the space shuttle, kids. We’re going to the rock show.
South Florida new-comers Supergold are here to make their presence known with their new single “Alligator.” The six-piece alternative group has only been together for a little under a year, but already has plans in motion for getting their name out there.
Frontman Alex Alston gave us the rundown on the band’s history, what they’ve been cooking up in the studio and what we can expect to see next.
I was immediately curious how anything gets done in a band with so many members. His immediate response was, “we all don’t fit in one car.”
The band has a fleet of white mini vans that he refers to as “space shuttles” that cart them and their equipment to and from shows. Other than the traveling aspect, he said it hasn’t been difficult managing so many creatives working on the same project.
He also shared that the band recorded back in June with the assistance of some of the creative minds that produce Alabama Shakes. Supergold is teasing fans with single releases that will eventually come together to form their debut EP. “Moneylover” was their first release back in September and “Alligator” is next in line.
The new single has this energy to it that almost reminds me of everything that’s good about watching a thriller. There’s this building sense of tension that mirrors the theme of obsession that is rampant throughout the lyrics. It’s like when everything that is happening in a movie scene floods you with anticipation and locks your attention in one place.
Although the band is still young and establishing their foothold in the Florida scene, they’ve done a good job of traveling throughout the state for shows. Alston brought up how expensive it can be for big-time bands to tour to his neck of the woods in SoFlo.
“I think it has made Florida grateful to local music, because it’s kind of all we’ve got,” he said of the Florida music scene.
I’d definitely agree that Florida has some of the most engaged and dedicated fans in the local scene. Bands are able to find “their people” and really take off from there. I don’t think a lot of other states could say that is the case.
I think it has made Florida grateful to local music, because it’s kind of all we’ve got.
Supergold has upcoming dates across Florida, and a few for us here in Gainesville early next year. Like the band on Facebook and check out their website to keep up with all new shows.
