Songs to Know Before the Show: SALES Essentials

Hailing from sunny Orlando, Florida, SALES is a testament to Florida grown bands being able to gain the momentum to make big strides in the music industry. Made up of Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih, the indie-pop duo delivers a melancholic offering of music that will attach a weight to your heart as you listen.
Between their minimalist approach to instrumentation and Morgan’s syrupy voice, listeners are coerced into a place of self-reflection. Each song elicits a strong emotional reaction and feels artfully clean and tailored.
The band is making a stop through High Dive on October 4 with Trapfone and Edmondson. In preparation for one of this season’s most anticipated shows in Gainesville, we have curated a list of our favorite SALES songs to know before the show.
“Getting It On”
What first hooked me about this song is how tender the intro is. It feels so delicate to the touch and then you’re hit with a simple yet passionate story of a painful romance. I think one of the most important writing processes is asking your internal questions aloud or on paper. Questions like “how could I be so wrong?” are repeated throughout the song as she works her way towards closure.
“Your Own”
“Your Own” runs through my mind like a screenplay. There’s this cinematic quality in the marriage of the lyrics and the stylistic choices of the song. Whoever this song was written about reminds me a lot of someone that I know. With that in mind, I enjoyed listening for the 2 minute and 57 second lifespan of this track and going back and hitting repeat a few times to dwell on it a while longer.
“Off and On”
This song is laced with a lighter, hopeful anticipation that sets it apart from a lot of the band’s other work. The element of this particular song that really did it for me was the vocalization. I caught myself making mental comparisons, thinking that parts of the song sounded like Stevie Nicks and No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani created an indie lovechild for modern music. This is the kind of mashup we never knew we needed…but yes, please.
“Big Sis”
You know that horrible, end-of-the-night classic “Closing Time” by Semisonic? This is my petition to replace that song with “Big Sis” by Sales permanently. Kick everyone out of the bar with this song, and I assure you that they’ll behave much more rationally. This song is the perfect easy-listening soundtrack for a nighttime walk home or to wherever you’re headed next. Big Sis is one of the band’s most popular songs, so I think we are really on to something here.
