Writer Testimonial: Why Join the GainesvilleScene Team

Summer is in session and you’ve probably blown through a few well-deserved weeks of relaxation. But as you sit at home thinking “ah, this free time is too great,” a part of you might be thinking about how you miss being busy. If you think it is too late in the game to secure a summer internship, you’re wrong! GainesvilleScene is looking for individuals with a passion for writing, editing, photography, public relations or any combination of the lot.
My Story with Scene
A little over a year ago, I was in that same uncomfortable position that many college students find themselves in: that looming feeling of needing reputable experience to add to your resume but feeling like your resume is too bland for anyone to want to hire you. I had been running a personal blog for a while to keep my writing skills sharp, but my readership was really just a few friends and family members that I was constantly bombarding on Facebook with my latest ramblings. At least once or twice, I had sent in a story as a guest post on GainesvilleScene, so I decided to inquire about a more permanent position.
I went through the interview process and found myself with a staff writer position. In the short time since, Scene has done more for me than I previously thought an internship could. I have found my niche in music writing, had the chance to interview famous musicians that I never dreamed would be interested in talking to me, and I’ve grown invaluable relationships with the people I’ve worked with. My favorite story to tell is about an interview that got so hilariously off-track that, months later, I ended up with new business opportunities and some ridiculous friendships.
Why Scene?
We get it. There are a lot of options when it comes to publications, but I sincerely believe that Scene offers its staff the most. One of my favorite aspects of writing for Scene is that there is a lot of freedom in what I am allowed to say. I can use my voice, I can have opinions, and hell, I can curse a little bit if it fits the direction of the piece.
Additionally, GainesvilleScene is an established name in the community. People are eager to work with us and saying you are with Scene gets you in the door. I’ve gotten to go to many incredible concerts, plays and events because people trust the reputation of our website. The fact that Scene is so established lends to the success I have had in reaching out to famous sources and not being disregarded.
As a writer, one of the biggest benefits is the in-depth feedback we get on our writing. The Scene editors take the time to go through your work with a fine-tooth comb to let you know what worked and what didn’t in the most constructive way possible. The flexibility in schedule is another added bonus. The whole team understands that sometimes there are weeks when life is too hectic to sit down and write. It is so much easier to create quality content without that weekly deadline breathing down your neck.
What I Do Now
A year into my time at Scene, my role has diversified a bit. I continue to write articles, but I have taken on a new role as an editor and as a member of the PR team. I get to keep sharing the stories I am passionate about, while helping other writers develop their stories and effectively share them on our social platforms. The job you take on at Scene is not limited to a specific area. If you want to try something new, there is nothing holding you back.
