New Year, New Concerts: Beach Fossils at High Dive

Around once a year, there is a Gainesville show that I mentally mark as the main musical event that I will hold above most others. This year, that show is happening pretty early on. Considering it’s only January, I’d say this is a good indicator of what else we have to look forward to in 2020.
Indie darlings Beach Fossils, Surf Curse and Negative Gemini will be dawning the stage of beloved High Dive on January 23. This tactfully concocted lineup is exactly what will satiate the growing appetites of our city’s ravenous music connoisseurs.
Beach Fossils is one of those names that dates back a couple years for me and many others. Titles like “Down the Line,” “Sugar” and “Sleep Apnea” hold latent memories within their album artwork and their melodies. The band is a reliable playlist veteran for the alternatively inclined.
A little newer to me, Surf Curse has been a bit of a recent gem on my Spotify. Once this show was announced, I intentionally dove into their discography to do my part as an educated concertgoer. “Disco” is at the top of my list of songs that I am excited to hear live, and I’ve heard they know how to command a stage. Negative Gemini is brand new to me, but I have my faith in the power of such a stacked lineup.
For anyone debating whether or not they should go out to see more live music this year, please do it. The greatest asset we have in Gainesville is our pick of great medium-sized venues where you can actually take in music in its purest variety. My favorite quote right now is from author Rich Cohen. In his book The Sun & The Moon & The Rolling Stones, he said, “The god of rock ’n’ roll is energy. The enemy of that god is arena rock, which looks and feels like real rock but is in truth an abomination.”
With that so perfectly said, take full advantage of seeing rising acts now before it is too late in their careers for them to go back to the feeling of an intimate venue.
