Venturing Into the Minds of Brewlympics’ Musical Talent

We had the chance to speak with a few of the music acts that will be performing at tomorrow’s Brewlympics and Creative Bash — DJ Stryzer, Retrolux, and Locochino — just to get a feel for who they are and what they really stand for.
Pineapple on pizza. Yes or no?
DJ Stryzer: I’m a big believer that if foods go well together, it should be encouraged that they are literally piled on top of each other. Ice cream and brownies. Potato chips and pub subs. And yes, occasionally pineapple and pizza.
Retrolux:
Anna: Yes!! Especially Hawaiian pizza.
Shaye: Sure, why not!
Benny Cannon of Locochino: Yes.
Favorite night time destination on a weekday in Gainesville? On the weekend?
DJ Stryzer: I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to get outside in Gainesville. Thanks to collaborations with groups like Gainesville Scene, we have places like the Boxcar down at Depot Park, Heartwood Soundstage, and our local breweries throwing cool, community events more regularly now. On weeknights, you can generally catch me at those! On the weekends I’m a fan of Barcade, your local house party, and occasionally being happily in bed well before 11pm.
Retrolux:
Anna: Barcade, or… my bed.
Shaye: I’m always out at the Backyard or the Top, and always go to the language exchange and foosball tournaments at the Midnight.
Locochino: Weekday: Loosey’s. Weekend: First Magnitude.
What are your favorite toppings on a pizza?
DJ Stryzer: Black olives, bananas, a surprising amount of sunscreen, and a dash of funk.
Retrolux:
Anna: Honestly, any kind of veggie ever.
Shaye: I love me some tempeh and onions.
Locochino: Pepperoni, Bacon, Jalapeno, Beef
Do you have any signature dishes of food that you create?
DJ Stryzer: “…I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in 20 minutes.” – Hugh Gallagher
Retrolux:
Anna: I make a mean banana bread.
Shaye: I’m pretty lazy so I almost always just make bowls of lentils and rice, with hummus and black beans. Occasionally I’ll add some sauteed vegetables. It’s not like… “good” but it keeps me alive.
Locochino: Ballin’ Ass Mac N Cheese
Do you have any words for our current president?
DJ Stryzer: I wish I did.
Retrolux:
Anna: Who is she?
Shaye: God… so many… [expletive removed] that guy…
Locochino: [political statement censored by manager at the request of unspecified persons]
What color of Crayon represents you best?
DJ Stryzer: According to Wikipedia, it is “electric lime”.
Retrolux:
Anna: Peach, formerly known as Flesh
Locochino: Olive Green
How would you describe that color of Crayon to a blind person?
DJ Stryzer: It’s as if you bit into an electrified lime.
Retrolux:
Anna: White girl buying Starbucks
Locochino: It’s like a balloon filled with magic that explodes into tacos!
Favorite song(s) from the 90s? From the 2000s?
DJ Stryzer: 90s: TLC “Waterfalls” (gets me right in the feels)
Fatboy Slim “The Rockefeller Skank” (first song that made me think “hey, repetitive music might not totally suck”)
Chumbawamba “Thubthumping” (Chumbawamba for life)
2000’s: LCD Soundsystem – Daft Punk Is Playing At My House (because it is.)
Vanessa Carlton “A Thousand Miles” (making my way downtown, walking fast…)
Calvin Harris “The Girls” (it proves he had unique talent at one point)
Retrolux:
Anna: All Star – Smashmouth. SomeBODY ONCE TOLD ME
Shaye: Semi-Charmed Life
Locochino: 90s: Smooth. 00’s: Grey Street.
What was the last gift you gave to someone?
DJ Stryzer: I gave my girlfriend the gift of bacon, which is the greatest gift of all.
Retrolux:
Anna: A fruit basket.
Shaye: Tons of cigarettes.
Locochino: Gave a giant bowl of homemade Mac n Cheese to Shaina (Benny’s girlfriend).
