With critically-acclaimed actors, award-winning directors and awe-inspiring plots all making the switch from the big screen to your computer screen, TV shows have significantly upped their game and have become your Friday night – scratch that – every night go-to.
Since you probably have already binged-watched all of Netflix, Amazon and Hulu’s best shows, I’ve compiled a list of this summer’s most anticipated and noteworthy TV shows both on television and your most-loved streaming websites. Trust me, these shows will have you a season deep in just a few hours. The only mistake you can make is watching one on a “netflix and chill” night.
Preacher
From the executive producer dream team Evan Goldberg (“Superbad” and “Neighbors”), Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”), and Seth Rogen (do I even need to list his achievements?) comes a new TV series airing on AMC. It begins when Jesse Custer and his lively, yet reckless girlfriend, Cassidy, move back to Jesse’s hometown in West Texas to take over his deceased father’s church. The real fun begins when things take a turn and Jesse’s body is overcome by a supernatural power that allows him to embark on his journey as a preacher-in-training while communicating with the holy and hellish world.
Atlanta
This new comedy series which airs on FX is created by Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino. It tells the age-old yet never boring story of how to make it in the music industry. When Earnest Marks, a failed musician and college dropout, moves to Atlanta he finds out his estranged cousin is a successful new rapper. Although they both have radically different views on how to make it big in the music world, they team up in order to make their way up the Atlanta rap scene.
Bloodline
This Netflix original series is back for its second season (cue the sigh of relief). If you didn’t watch the first season, stop whatever you are doing, hit a new tab on your computer and start “Bloodline.” It takes place in a family-owned resort in UF student’s favorite spring break getaway: Key West. It’s filled with the necessary four d’s: drama, drugs, death and deceit. I like to call this TV show the perfect storm, because you will simultaneously love it and hate yourself for watching it all in one week.
Chef’s Table
For all you “Tasty” video fanatics and Rachel Ray (Not Roy, relax people) fans, Netflix is continuing this documentary series just for all the foodies out there. The first season which only has six episodes profiles a different well-known chef from all over the world like Sweden, Italy and Argentina in each episode. The cinematography is gorgeous and drool-worthy, so try not to watch this show on an empty stomach.
Feed the Beast
The first episode airs on June 5th on AMC and is well worth the wait. For “Friends” fans that loved to watch the sweet/moronic tendencies of Ross Geller, be prepared to see a whole other side of him. David Schwimmer stars along Jim Sturgess as two chefs and best friends that decide to open their dream restaurant. Their dreams, however, are dampened when one chef gets in trouble with the Mob.
Angie Tribeca
“Parks and Recreation” and “The Office” star Rashida Jones (Angie Tribeca) is the lead in this satirical police TV series created and produced by Steve Carrell. Honestly, that sentence is more than enough incentive to start watching. But if you need a little more convincing, the show’s hilarious first season ended this January and it’s second season will air on TBS on June 6th. The show chronicles Angie’s time as LAPD’s head of the RHCU, Really Heinous Crimes Unit.
O.J.: Made in America
Beware Kim, the O.G. Kardashian is back and ready to steal your spotlight. The 7-hour movie is split into a five episode series that airs on ABC on June 11th. The series takes a fresh and in depth look into the world famous 8-month trial. With an impressive compilation of interviews including suspects, police detectives, jury members and key courtroom players, the series showcases an honest account of the tragic situations that occurred during the trial.
Braindead
From the producers of the hit TV show “The Good Wife” (a show I highly recommend if you love girl bosses and sassy humor), “Braindead” is set in Washington D.C. (Because D.C. is the new L.A., duh.) It follows a newly hired Capitol Hill staffer who, after a few days on the job, discovers aliens have come to Earth and eaten the brains of congressmen and Hill staffers. Yes, I’m dead serious. Sci-fi and zombies lovers unite for this seriously interestingly horrific take on working on the Hill.
Chelsea
Oh. Hell. Yes! Chelsea Handler is leaving the TV days behind her and is entering the friendly and loved Netflix screen. Since the ending of “Chelsea Lately,” her old late-night talk show, there has been a hole in America’s heart, but Chelsea’s blunt and charismatic humour is back in a new talk show with three new episodes on Netflix each week. My only concern is, will Chuy be making an appearance?
Orange is the New Black
You can probably feel my excitement through the screen. “Orange is the New Black” is coming back for its fourth season on Netflix on June 17th. The new season will delve into some touchy territory with sassy new inmates and naive security guards. Thus, the prison becomes subject to new cultural barriers. ( Prepare for some seriously controversial arguments on Facebook after the show.)
So there you have it kids, your summer watch-list. Now go call your squad over, heat up some popcorn and start your binge-watching. Oh and don’t forget the wine, lots and lots of wine.
