Meet FOMO: the App for Boozy Deals in Gainesville

The small panic inside your chest, the waterfall of longing, regretting thoughts, the burn of jealousy, the worthless anger of learning something too late, an anxiety only comparable to that of a child left in timeout while his peers go to Disney World. Fear of missing out, or as many refer to it: FOMO.
We are blessed here in Gainesville with beautiful weather, fun people, endless venues and events and priceless extra time to enjoy them. (Thanks to Study Edge.) However, we learn early in our freshman year that the good life can often times harbor this first world phobia known as FOMO.
A few University of Florida students who were all too familiar with the this feeling, decided to make an app in attempt to alleviate some of this perilous anxiety. They named it, quite appropriately, FOMO.
FOMO was launched on Andriod and iOS just a few weeks ago and, well, it’s pretty damn cool. It is a simple, contemporary app that delivers you all your weekly specials, of all your bars in Gainesville, divided by Midtown and Downtown, right to your fingertips.
FOMO also has a tab with all the upcoming events going on in Gainesville and, thank god, they delete themselves when the event has already happened. No more missing out on bounce house opportunities. No more false hope picking up a flier from 3 weeks ago.
“There is so much going on in Gainesville all the time, but we’re too lazy to learn about new places and our Facebook is clogged up with so many notifications we’re too lazy to navigate through,” said Laura Barry, FOMO marketing VP. “We end up going to the same place with the same people every night, when there’s so much more we could be doing”.
While this app is certainly a prayer answered to those who are too poor to buy full priced drinks and too lazy try and figure out all the specials, the golden baby feature of FOMO is their flash deals. This feature allows bars to upload whatever deal they want onto FOMO, whenever they want.
“We wanted there to be a way bars could connect with customers through our app,” said FOMO co-founder Jimmy Parenteau.
Bars can have this special last for however long they want too, so you better check FOMO before they’re gone. Prime example: ooZoo has free drinks right now for anyone who downloads FOMO.
It’s about to be a long, hot summer A, so you best stay tuned for what’s to come.
