Active Streets Takes Over University Avenue

Gainesville, it’s time to turn off Netflix and take to the streets.
This Sunday, April 3rd, the Active Streets Alliance will bring the streets of Gainesville to life. The Alliance will be putting on a free local event transforming our most iconic local roadway into a lively hub of activities led by local organizations and businesses. A mile-long stretch of University Avenue will be closed off to cars for the event.
The Alliance aims to create more equitable access to our community’s public space by celebrating alternate forms of transportation and promoting active lifestyles. The Florida Department of Transportation and City of Gainesville are the two major funders of the event.
After the success of last year’s Active Streets event, pedestrians can once again claim the streets.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., local vendors will be provide free services and activities, like yoga, Zumba, sidewalk-chalk, a bike parade, dancing and taste testings. Local bands will also be performing and restaurants will remain open. In years past, restaurants like Sweet Mel’s took to the streets, serving up yummy eats outside.
With over 70 businesses contributing to the event last year, this year’s turnout is expected to be even more widespread, with over 1.6 thousand people already interested in the Facebook event.
So, skip the trips to the bars this weekend and enjoy an active day in the vibrant streets of Gainesville, uninhibited by traffic and noise pollution. Bring a bike or some walking shoes and show the city, the locals and yourself some love.
