Whether you love all things earthy or couldn’t care less about the environment, the 7th annual Cinema Verde Environmental Film festival is the place to be this weekend.
Gainesville is home to countless opportunities to develop a love and consciousness for sustainability, but this festival is one of the most unique local events in the area.
Featuring over 40 environmental films from around the world, Cinema Verde offers the chance to experience the perspective of directors from all over the world and see stunning documentaries that inform, challenge and inspire our notions of environmentalism.
With the film directors present for discussions, the films take on a dimension that far exceeds any movie or documentary you can simply find on Netflix. And if celebrity is your thing, the festival will begin with Emmy award-winning filmmaker Elam Stoltzfus from Tallahassee, Fla.
If cinema doesn’t strike your fancy, Cinema Verde will also feature a local food potluck that will celebrate sustainable and delicious cuisine, as well as an Eco-Fair with art vendors and live musical performances from local artists.
“Our community – locally and globally – is the reason for this festival,” said Cinema Verde Director Trish Riley. It is an opportunity to educate everyone about environmental issues and why sustainability is important.”
Attending this uniquely-Gainesville festival is about being in the know and connecting with your surroundings on a deeper level. It’s a chance to tackle the oftentimes intimidating concerns of environment in an uplifting, social atmosphere.
The festival serves as a forum for community organizations, businesses and citizens to figure out new ways to work together and stay informed on what is already being done in the way of positive change.
For four days, surrounded by the charm of downtown Gainesville and the beauty of the Hippodrome, you have the chance to experience sustainability in an exciting and interesting way. Cinema Verde is a festival you won’t want to miss.
