Tis’ the Season for Slurping in Downtown Gainesville

There are a few three things we really enjoy here at GainesvilleScene: Gainesville bars, helping the community and ridiculous outfits.
Luckily we found a way to incorporate all three into one event with this year’s Seasonal Slurp, a holiday bar crawl through downtown Gainesville.
It’s a chance to don your tackiest holiday sweater, enjoy some killer drink specials and donate to Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, a local charity that does amazing work in our community.
Purchase your $5 wristband here and prepare for a night of sloppy seasonal sipping. Wristbands will be available for pickup at our first bar of the night, Tall Paul’s.
Here’s a sneak peek of the bars we’ll be crawling to and why they are just so damn cool.
Tall Pauls
Our first stop on the the crawl is a crowd favorite. Nestled in the heart of downtown Gainesville, Tall Paul’s is inviting and spacious with its diverse crowd, large open windows aand its always-good live music. Grab yourself a tall pour of their in-house craft beer and jump in on a game of foosball or giant connect four. The bartenders are happy to explain the beer selection and you can strike up a conversation with almost any bar goer- from the young professional to the college-aged whippersnapper. Head in on Thursdays for the 8 to 10 p.m. special on beers and wines or swing by on a cool fall evening and order a Chai Palmer while you catch the Gator game with a group of pals.
Whiskey House
The next stop on our crawl lands us at an oh-so-swanky spot on the map: Whiskey House. The selection is unrivaled; from Canadian and Irish pours to an impressive list of ryes and scotches, you’ll be swivelling and swirling your whiskey on the rocks like refined Kentuckian you yearn to be. And that’s just the beginning; the cocktails give the phrase ‘artfully crafted for the acute palette’ its meaning and the live music adds a delightful touch to the experience. The ambiance is warm, romantic, and inviting- like you after your third Old Fashioned
“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” -Mark Twain
Sweet Mels
Come one, come all to this classic all-American bar and grill. Sweet Mel’s is a family owned and operated spot that’s been serving up some seriously awesome food and bev for the past five years. If you thought art was limited to paintbrushes and composing music, then you’ve never sunk your incisors into one of Mel’s incredibly decadent burgers. It doesn’t stop at the burgers either, the wings are outrageous. Infact, Mel’s has an entire day dedicated to these chicken parts. “Wingo” combines 45 cent chicken wings and bingo. The crowd is raging, the brew is flowing and the sauce selection never ends. Beyond the great grub and drink selection, the staff is just about the nicest bunch of people we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Pop in, say hello, and before you know it you’ll have made best friends with one (or all) of the welcoming staff members.
Pro Tip: Head to Mel’s on a Saturday night, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the Latin dance beats pulsing from the speakers while throngs of vibrant individuals do their best rendition of Ruben Pfeffer’s great debut.
House Of Beer
Gainesville House Of Beer is all about having a huge selection of the most well received beers from across the country and around the world. HOB has transformed over the past few years from the spot to get a few good beers to a bustling social establishment with an incredible selection of the best beers offered in town. Hoppy goodness flows from the bar’s 40 taps with the nation’s top brews and local favorites like Cigar City, Swamp Head, and First Magnitude. One of our favorite things about House of Beer is its growing crowd of soccer fanatics. The bar even opens at 8 a.m. on Saturdays for premier league games. What we’re saying is, grab a local brew and watch Leicester City and Jamie Vardy continue to kick ass on the green. Swing by on Tuesdays for “Florida Beer Night” and “Student/Faculty Night” which includes discounts on Florida brews and markdowns with a student/faculty ID.
Come one, come all to the sloppiest holiday event of the season.
