If you’re looking for a music festival to throw on your douchiest tank tops, loudest neon colors and rage face (bro), there’s a possibility you’re still stranded at TomorrowWorld in Georgia wondering if you’ll make it to Ultra in Miami by March if you start walking now (It would take about nine days, according to Google Maps).
If that sort of thing isn’t your bag, and you love musicians and artists who are super trendy from their meticulously-styled heads to their toes, III Points Music, Art & Technology should strike your fancy.
Since 2013, the festival has been held in the incredible Wynwood art district of Miami with the goal of bringing attention to the blossoming art, food and culture of the area while curating musical lineups featuring some of the world’s most avant-garde artists.
While you won’t hear many, if any, of these musical acts on your typical FM radio stations, there’s plenty of talent, good vibes and good tunes to go around with this year’s III Points lineup. Here’s a look at some of the acts to watch out for this year.
Nicolas Jaar
Patience is a virtue, and few artists in the world teach that lesson as well as Nicolas Jaar. The New York-based electronic producer has been active in the underground scene since 2008, making a massive name for himself with his 2011 debut album “Space Is Only Noise.”
Jaar will be throwing down a DJ set Friday night, bound to be a minimalistic mix of deep house and ambient tracks. You shouldn’t expect much epic, hands-in-the-air type music from the set, but the music is bound to uplift you by the end if you give it the chance.
Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels burst on to the rap music scene in 2013, but its members Killer Mike and El-P have been big players for years. The duo’s debut “Run The Jewels”brought them critical acclaim, and their follow up “Run The Jewel’s 2” topped Pitchfork’s “50 Best Albums of 2014.”
These guys put on a wildly energetic show, doing justice to the aggressive nature of their music and getting their crowds hyped. If you’re trying to stand around in a circle with your boys and go dumb (shout out to the Hyphy movement), or trying to enjoy some intelligent witticisms, most definitely check out Run The Jewels.
Ghostface Killah + Doom
In terms of shows you won’t be able to see anywhere outside of III Points, this is definitely one that comes to mind. Ghost face Killah, of Wu-Tang Clan fame, is teaming up with hip hop artist DOOM (aka MF DOOM). DOOM’s status on performing in the United States has been hazy since he was denied entrance to the country after completing a European Tour in 2010.
AlunaGeorge
You can credit Disclosure’s modern classic “Settle” for bringing AlunaGeorge into the public consciousness, as Aluna Francis, one half of the British duo, lent her voice to the track “White Noise.”The duo’s other half, producer George Reid, combines bass music, garage and dubstep to make for some great future pop.
The duo’s performances generally include a live drummer in addition to Francis’front woman role and Reid’s MIDI work. All in all, their live show promises a bundle of fun and a whole lot of dancing.
Soul Clap
Looking for some damn good house music? Like, some really damn good house music? Soul Clap is the dance party you’ve been looking for. Hailing from Boston, the duo composed of Eli “Elyte”Goldstein and Charles “Cnyce”Levine specializes in feel good vibes and starting parties.
Be ready to get funky, as the duo has a classic house feel to their mixing and makes you feel like you were back in Chicago during the 1980s. (If you weren’t alive at the time, you’ll feel like you were.)
