How Scandalous is the Clinton Email Scandal?

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the “Clinton Email Scandal.” Truthfully, I’m conflicted. I’m a female college student who wants nothing more than for the United States to have a female president.

When the news broke headlines, I was beginning to wonder if I could trust her with the presidency or as a politician in general.

I was one of the first people to admit that I thought the patriarchic men of the Republican Party had cooked up a new plan to take her down. It’s not a far-fetched idea to say that Donald Trump, among other candidates, doesn’t like the idea of a female president.

So I did a little bit of research to find out what this was all about.

Basically here’s what happened:

Hilary used a private server in her New York home instead of a government server to send emails from the state department.

What does that mean? Instead of having a state.gov email address, she used her own email. She did this during her entire term as secretary of state.

What’s the big deal? People work from home all the time.

Yes, but not everyone has access to all of the state department’s security files. It’s no secret that modern warfare has escalated from nuclear attacks to cyber attacks. The risk that both foreign and domestic hackers could have gotten access to confidential files was much higher with her use of a private server.

The story continues when members of congress said that she had violated record keeping laws. Not true, but she did put a lot of people at risk.

Actually the record keeping laws requiring a secure server weren’t put into effect until after she left office.

But this is the part where I became skeptical.

The Justice Department asked that she turn her email server into the FBI. She did end up doing this months later, after she wiped her server clean and deleted a number of what she says are “personal emails.”

Since October 2014, the question has remained whether or not she was sending and receiving classified information. Both Hilary and her campaign staff have denied any claims about classified info.

Without a doubt, Hilary’s campaign team is putting up a strong defense with this matter. Check out this video from her press secretary that rebuttals some of the arguments against her.

One thing is for sure, this is definitely not a partisan or female attack. Three separate organizations are investigating her: The FBI, the Justice Department and the U.S. House Select Committee on Benghazi. All these organizations are under a democratic administration.

Even while Hilary is under investigation, it is going to be a very long time before all of these emails, classified or not, are sorted out. Regardless, she will not be put in jail because she is not under criminal investigation.

This email scandal is definitely a little fishy, but it is also being blown up. After the first Clinton scandal, it seems easy for the media to point fingers at another Clinton.

We all know that the Clinton family members are politicians first and celebrities next. While having an affair with a member of your staff is a scandal, sending government emails through the wrong server is more of a security risk than anything else.
