This is from our friends at Gainesville Grub. Check ‘em out for fresh food + drink stories.
When I think of arcade games, I’m instantly transported to the days of overpriced video arcades [insert Game Works, Chuck E. Cheese, Dave & Buster’s here]. As an annoying 10-year-old, I’d beg my mom for just a few more dollars so I could earn enough tickets for a bouncy ball or mini lava lamp, and she would begrudgingly give in, then drown her parental sorrows in another glass of chardonnay. (Note to self: Never have children.)
Barcade, the new (ish) bar/arcade located at 6 E. University Ave. in Downtown Gainesville brings those youthful memories back to life, except with way more alcohol, and sadly, without mom’s wallet.
With three stories, two bars and enough pinball machines to empty your piggy bank, Barcade is a stellar new spot for nighttime debauchery. It brings you the same retro vibes of The Top dynasty: The Top restaurant, No Name Bar, Pop-a-Top and The Atlantic, but with a more diverse crowd.
Whether you’re into the old-school video games (shout out Paper Boy) or want to earn a small bar tab with a high scoring skeeball game, there’s something to keep you entertained.
It’s a great spot for a casual date or an upbeat after-dinner drink. You and your Tinder date can get into the playful competitive spirit with the games or simply sit down in one of the many cozy little nooks and booths for a bit of conversation about how they look nothing like their profile.
As far as beverages go, the beer selection is small but varied. The specialty cocktails are simple but tasty and strong. I recommend the Chun-Li, a gin, soda and strawberry concoction. (It’s a nice way for the local sorority gals to break away from the Basic “vodka, soda and lime.”)
Barcade has been packed since it opened its doors, and with its comfy atmosphere, I’m not surprised it’s drawn such a steady crowd. If you haven’t checked it out yet, put it on your to-do list for this week.
And be sure to buy your own bouncy ball because they don’t have those there.
