The day has come.
The blessed, beautiful moment Florida’s craft-beer drinkers have all been longing for has finally arrived.
After years of battling with the suits in Tallahassee, Florida breweries can finally rejoice in the victory of filling up 64 oz. growlers with fermented, hoppy goodness for their patrons. Moving out of the dark ages, Florida has deemed the 64 oz. growler legal in an effort to keep up with the microbrewery industry standards of the rest of the country.
Here in Gainesville, this means on July 1, you will be able to walk into Swamp Head or First Magnitude and purchase a gallon of some of your favorite beers straight from the taps of the breweries in which they were made.
In celebration of the law, Swamp Head is hosting a 64 oz. Growler Day at The Wetlands, their tasting room located at 3650 SW 42 Avenue. If you haven’t been to their recently opened location yet, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. (Everybody needs a little mid-week booze, right?)

Have a buddy with a gluten allergy that’s willing to drive you around (poor, poor soul…)? Head on down to First Magntidue Brewery who will be celebrating the win with new 64 oz. growlers of their own for you to purchase, love and, ultimately, imbibe from.
Outside of Gainesville, 64 oz. growlers will have huge implications for a state with a craft brewing scene that is ready to take off on a national scale.
The Tampa area is one of the fastest growing beer scenes in the country, highlighted by breweries such as Cigar City and 3 Daughters. With the change in the law, it’s likely Tampa, Gainesville and the rest of the state will experience an even faster growth rate in the craft beer industry. Who could be upset with more great beer to choose from? Seems like a great excuse to take a few road trips, and we finally have the legal right to bring the beer we love back home in a 64 oz. growler.
So although you could pick up a couple of cases of Budweiser for Independence Day this weekend, nothing is really more patriotic than supporting your local businesses. Why settle for industrial-grade grain drink when you can pick up a gallon of the best beer Gainesville has to offer brewed by the loving hands of your local community?
