Although we love to view the world in absolutes, things are seldom black and white. Heroes have skeletons in their closets and assholes secretly donate money to the ASPCA commercials with Sarah McLachlan. Okay, maybe not.
But the point is that the world is a complex place, full of moral ambiguity, double standards and mixed feelings.
So we have taken it upon ourselves to bring back the epic binary of good versus bad, right versus wrong, and virtuous versus evil.
We humbly present you Asshole and Hero of the week.

Asshole: Cynthia V. Anderson
This week Cynthia V. Anderson, a Central Florida woman drowned a puppy in an airport bathroom because the animal was too young to fly. She was also carrying two other dogs and puppies with her as well.
When Anderson was informed that the puppies were too young to fly, she had two of them picked up by her parents. No one is clear as to why the third puppy was not awarded the same treatment.
While there were plenty of other terrible things that happened this week, I feel that puppy-killing is something that ought to be acknowledged for being a complete asshole move. The creature was less than a month old and couldn’t even open its eyes! Are you that cold-hearted of a person to drown a puppy in a toilet because it was too young to fly?
The worst part of all of this is that there is no reason why the puppy should have been killed in the first place. (There is no reason for a puppy to be killed in any case ever, but especially not in this case.) She had her parents pick up the other two puppies from the airport after she was told they were too young to fly. Would it have been that much more of a hassle to give the parents the third puppy too?
Clearly, Ms. Anderson has some issues she needs to work through, and I’m just sorry for that poor, defenseless puppy that had to suffer the consequences of those issues being ignored. RIP, little pup. You were taken too soon by an asshole too crazy.

Hero(es): The hundreds of people who protested the eviction of a cancer patient from his home
In Nottingham, England this week, 63 year-old cancer patient Tom Crawford was going to be evicted from his home for not being able to pay the mortgage owed to his lenders.
According to Crawford, he paid off the 26-year mortgage he took out on the house back in 1988, but his lenders, Bradford & Bingley (straight-up villain names if you ask me), disputed this claim. For 26 years, this man has been paying Bradford & Bingley, and just because they say he hasn’t been paying, he can just be evicted? Oh, hell no.
To fight this, Crawford’s daughter started a plea on Facebook, and this week, people came to show support to his cause – about 200 of them actually. The people showed up to Crawford’s house and blocked bailiffs from forcing him out.
I like this moment because it shows a group of people not only willing to take on an establishment but also coming together to support their fellow man. Whether they felt badly because Crawford has cancer or because they believe he’s being wrongfully evicted, it doesn’t matter. They came out and showed their support because they wanted to show solidarity.
When people come together to show support for their country or another country, it’s great. It demonstrates that we’re all in this together (no “High School Musical” pun intended). But when people do it for someone they’ve never met and someone who’s just a regular guy, the statement of togetherness is even more powerful.
