I remember a time when watching football used to be about actually believing in the team that I love. I remember a time when it used to be about respecting the players who played it. Even when my team was losing, at least I had respect for the players. But, nowadays, I can’t even have that.
I mean, really. What is it with all these football players, man?
If you look at the NFL right now, various players have been accused of domestic abuse since this summer. Some have been suspended, others have been fined, others arrested. Regardless of how these cases have been handled, the trend seems to be trickling down to college athletes.

Everyone knows the story about the ill-handled rape case against Florida State University’s quarterback, Jameis Winston, that began back in December 2012, and his more recent dalliance with the law involving stolen crab legs. But it doesn’t stop there. He also decided to scream out sexually charged obscenities in the middle of FSU’s student union, an action that got him suspended for one whole game.
What a guy.
Then came a sexual assault accusation against one of our own players, Treon Harris. The full report was released on Oct. 23, and it tells both sides of the story involving Harris and his accuser. After a heated he-said-she-said investigation that led nowhere, the accusation was later recanted and no charges were brought against Harris.

And it seems that yet another football player has been accused of domestic abuse. Florida State University’s top rusher, running back Karlos Williams has been accused of the crime, and he is the third FSU player to be accused of abuse in the last two years.
The Tallahassee Police Department responded to a call this past weekend involving Williams and his girlfriend. This is the second time that the police have responded to a call involving these two. Last January, they were called about a possible domestic violence case, but it was later dropped to a mere domestic disturbance after police learned it was just a verbal altercation.
It seems that Tallahassee Police have a habit of reducing charges or completely dismissing cases against FSU football players all together, but what is more interesting than this possible cover-up is the fact that these players are so interwoven with the law in the first place.

In my opinion, it seems that these players don’t know just how scrutinized they are. In some cases, like the one involving Jameis Winston, these players start to believe the hype surrounding them, thinking that they are untouchable. But, that isn’t the case.
You may be a football star, but that doesn’t really matter in cases of breaking the law, or at least, it shouldn’t. You are in the public eye, which means that what you do isn’t a secret. It’s out there for everyone to see. You should take this knowledge into consideration when you make choices in your life.
With football players’ actions becoming exposed across all levels, it is a wonder that anyone can still put their faith in these athletes. I, for one, cannot. I no longer believe in these players in life. I no longer believe in them on the field. I have lost faith in them and in the game.
