Although we love to view the world in absolutes, things are seldom black and white. Heroes have skeletons in their closets and assholes secretly donate money to the ASPCA after watching the commercials with Sarah Mclachlan. Okay, maybe not.
But the point is that the world is a complex place, full of moral ambiguity, double standards and mixed feelings.
So, we at GainesvilleScene have taken the task upon ourselves to bring back the epic binaries of “good” versus “bad,” “right” versus “wrong” and “virtuous” versus “evil.”
We now humbly present to you: Asshole and Hero of the Week.
Asshole: Todd Kincannon

Todd Kincannon is the chairman of the Simpsonville, South Carolina Election Commission. According to Wikipedia, he seems to be a pretty smart guy with several science degrees, which is pretty bizarre considering he spends a substantial portion of his life trolling people on Twitter. I have a sneaking suspicion that he only completed these degrees so he could assume some ethos in calling people stupid all the time. He is a perfect role model for middle school girls everywhere.
In 2013 he tweeted that transgender people should be shipped off to concentration camps. After this account was suspended, he returned in early 2014 with a new account with which he has continued to projectile vomit his heinous views all over the Internet.
Naturally, in response to the UCSB shooting fiasco he has raised quite the shitstorm.
I don’t want to write about him anymore because just reading his Twitter feed is making me depressed about the state of humanity.
If you want to feel disgusted, check it out for yourself. Absurdist or not, he’s a dick.
Hero: Maya Angelou

Via: achievement.org
Maya Angelou, the American author, poet, civil rights activist, professor, TV/film producer, playwright and actress, died today in North Carolina. She was 86 years old.
Angelou will be forever be treasured as America’s Renaissance Woman for her many contributions to literature, civil rights and humanity in general.
A childhood victim of rape after which she went mute for five years, a single mother who performed in strip clubs to support her family, she is the quintessential example of just how far a person can bounce back from adversity.
Her writing will remain cherished for centuries to come and she will forever be remembered as a cultural icon responsible for changing the scope of history. Because of her, she died in a world far different from the one she was born into.
In the words of the writer herself, “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”
