The New York duo, Designer Drugs, consisting of Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson may have performed on six continents, but are they ready to take on Gainesville?
Wednesday, July 10, electro duo Designer Drugs will take the stage at Simons Nightclub.
Before you rage with them, GainesvilleScene will help you get to know them first.
Let’s start with EDC Vegas. What are your thoughts?
EDC was massive. I’m not sure how many people were there, but it was huge. We actually didn’t play at the festival, we played at a strip club pool party early in the afternoon. Definitely one of the biggest events I’ve been to. It’s pretty incredible how far electronic music has come since we’ve gotten involved with it. I like how many people are involved now, but I don’t like the enormous parties as much as the tight knit, smaller parties, with lots of people we know. It’s a little more difficult for me to get settled into something like that, but it [EDC Vegas] was quite an experience. I would recommend everyone go at least once. I was pretty tired… I wish I had more sleep.
How did you come up with the name ‘Designer Drugs’?
Michael actually suggested it. He came across it in a library in high school. It literally means a drug derivative designed to bypass federal schedule laws, but we sort of mean it in a non-literal sense. Kind of a music-is-our-drug thing. It’s given us some trouble, but not too much. For example, Malaysia has strict anti-drug laws and are often a little nervous booking us. We’ve had to censor it a bit in the past. We love the name though.
How long have you been producing music?
I’ve literally been writing music since I was a young kid, maybe 8. I started writing piano melodies and songs at that time, during my classical piano lesson era. Michael and I have been working together for about 16 years, since we were 15 years old.
Who are your musical influences?
The early jungle/drum ‘n’ bass scene heavily influenced us in the 90s. We actually started producing drum ‘n’ bass. Later, when the whole euro-electro house trash scene started getting popular and everyone was starting to blog house and hypem got popular, we switched to electro.
I think Felix The House Cat, Ladytron and the Bloody Beetroots were all big influences initially. There are a million bands that have influenced us in one way or another though.
In a few words, describe the type of set Gainesville should expect?
