The Procrastinator’s Guide to Gator Graduation Photos
Whether you are cramming for finals until the last minute or busy marinating in alcohol during your few remaining senior weeks in the `Ville, graduation photos may be at the bottom of your priorities.
To all of you seasoned procrastinators, fret not; our photographers Izzy Guttuso and Ivan Castro are professionals at making you look like you actually have your shit together after four years of pretending to study.
Even better, we’ve compiled a list of Gainesville hot spots worthy enough to set the stage for your next long-term profile picture.
For the traditional, spirited and obviously stereotypical choice, the good ole Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is an easy, go-to grad photo location. That is, if you can weave between the girls in white dresses waddling across the bleachers in heels while managing to stay dry from the frat stars shotgunning their beers on the field.
As cliche as it may be, every gator grad has a slight obligation to get a picture in the very stadium they have little blacked-out recollection of. Plus, you might shame your Gator alum family members if you do without an awkward picture straddling Albert.
For a more unique twist on your grad photos, opt for the scenic views of Depot Park which serves as a distractingly beautiful scene during sunrise and sunset. For you curious grads who prefer the more cultured things in life (also known as the east side of Gainesville), then you definitely know how perfectly Depot and Boxcar have captured Gainesville’s community essence. Plus, the orange exterior of the Boxcar provides a perfect rustic and gator-themed backdrop to all of your senior shots.
Graduation month is no time to downplay your inner high-key nerd. Embrace the double helix bond you have for this university and strike a pose next to the ambiguous bacon look alike and all of its glory draped across 13th street. With such an intellectual, contemporary backdrop, you may just convince a family member or two that your major was in something other than bar hopping.
If you’re more colorful than the average grad and perhaps have many memories wandering downtown between musically rich evenings as a student, the plethora of murals from the 352Walls project provides eclectic and eye-catching backgrounds for your photos. Pose underneath the flying and flaming eyeball on the east wall of Market Street Pub or do a gator chomp next to the Bull’s artistically crafted C10H15N (methamphetamine compound) for a subtle trolling twist to grandma’s grad photo of you on the mantle.
For those of you who are slightly more adventurous and have successfully ventured past the 2 mile UF bubble in your 4 years, welcome to the lovely downtown: land of good music, brick streets, man-buns and conversations with more substance than its midtown counterpart.
Maybe you are a real risk taker and even made it farther than Tall Paul’s Thursday or Rockey’s Dueling Piano Bar. If so, a graduation shoot at the cross streets of SE 2nd Place and SE 1st Street provides an aesthetically pleasing brick building background with the steps and pillars of the Hippodrome providing a grandeur scene for your senior shots.
Ivan and Izzy are highly skilled photographers with dynamic portfolios and are available to take care of any last-minute grad photos or other general photography inquiries.
