#LaunchTheScene: Your Beauty Roundup
Avani creator and owner Brianna Cryar says that the purpose behind her company came with extensive research and the belief behind the benefits that can only come from a truly organic product.
“After doing a ton of research and coming to the conclusion that natural and organic beauty products have a multitude of benefits over commercial ones, I decided to clear out my entire bathroom of any products with certain ingredients in them, such as sulfates, parabens, synthetic preservatives, artificial colors and artificial fragrance,” said Cryar.
Unlike most products on the market that are coined as organic, avani doesn’t cut corners and avoids toxic ingredients and sulfates.
“This is my passion, and it’s what I’d love to do for the rest of my life. I want them to always know that they’re getting the highest quality ingredients inside and that each one is there for a reason— no fillers, just pure, intentional ingredients,” Cryar expressed.
Nirvana Bath and Body is no exception to the quality standards you can expect from local bath products. Owner and creator Shawnna Thompson named her business to reflect the feeling she wants her customers to get when using her products.
“I wanted one word that would capture the feeling of total relaxation and bliss you get from treating yourself to a hot bubble bath,” explained Thompson.
Thompson’s products aren’t just relaxing, they’re effective. I stopped by her booth at Union Square Farmer’s Market in downtown Gainesville and picked up one of her skincare items.
I have super oily skin, so I was immediately drawn to a solid charcoal cleanser in the shape of a heart— a physical representation for how much I loved this product. Charcoal is great for absorbing oils from the skin and since it is a solid cleanser, it was also very easy to apply.
It was beyond convenient for shower-use rather than applying the product onto my hands and then my face. While the cleanser itself was effective, the smell was something you wouldn’t traditionally find in any regular cleanser.
For me, I can always tell how high quality a product is by the pureness of the scent. If it smells like chemicals or sulfates, it’s an immediate turn off. However, this cleanser was almost herbaceous. I couldn’t quite put my finger on the mixture of scents itself, but it was vibrant, floral and totally intoxicating.
I also tested out the Sea Polish from avani. This stuff smoothes your skin like it’s polishing a fine diamond. When it comes to exfoliating products, I love abrasiveness and this one definitely satisfied that sensation. Not only did it exfoliate my skin really well, it left it feeling nourished and moisturized.
When I asked the owner of avani about what makes this product so special, she told me it was the babassu oil in the scrub. She said it has all of the moisturizing properties of popular moisturizers like coconut oil, but doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy like coconut oil can.
According to her, babassu oil is easily absorbed into your skin. After almost a week with this product, I can attest to how well this blends into the skin. It doesn’t leave a film or shine from the oil.
avani and Nirvana Bath and Body have placed out a collection of products that display the care their owners put into each bottle and container. The passion from both of these business owners shows in the quality of their products. While both of these businesses are under a year old, they’ve both created a remarkable line of products.
“This week I have two new products coming out that I’ve been working really hard on— wax melts and whipped sugar scrub. I’ll also have a couple new bath bombs. It’s pretty normal for me to have new products every week. My shower is always overflowing with new goodies I’m testing out,” Thompson said.
avani will also be producing a variety of new products such as a concentrated bath oil, lip polish, and hair/body oil along with a “Mama + Baby” line in the spring. You can find products from avani and Nirvana Bath and Body online at Etsy.com and at the Union Square Farmer’s Market.
Come support these local names in beauty at GainesvilleScene’s launch party this Thursday on November 17th.
