Gainesville Breakfast of Champions

Whether you pair of lovebirds are still together in the morning or you roll out of bed alone and grumpy, nothing starts the day better than a solid breakfast.
They say it’s the most important meal of the day, so put down the Pop-Tart and make it the most delicious meal of the day as well.
Gainesville Scene’s guide to breakfast:
Emma’s Pick – Civilization
Nothing says good morning like a sketchy parking lot and hipster servers with ironic facial hair. Brunch at Civilization is simply wonderful.
Sit inside for a cozy meal where you can admire the funky architecture or sit outside for the street café in Paris type feel (ignore the occasional stray kitten…this is Gainesville, ya know). Civilization buys local and organic food whenever possible, so everything tastes fresh. If you want to be in a food coma by noon, try their Cajun Frittata, which is a baked egg dish filled with grilled andouille sausage, roasted red pepper, potato, and Gruyere cheese. It’ll be accompanied by the crispiest home fries you’ll ever eat. Don’t forget to pair it with their free-trade coffee for a civilized morning (or a bottle of table beer for uncivilized one).
Jake’s Pick – Bay Island
You wake up Sunday morning with chapped lips and a dry mouth. Your Brita water pitcher is empty. Lying on your coffee table is a half-eaten Five Star pizza. You think to yourself: I’m better than this.
Do you smell like a foot? Do you look like Amy Winehouse? Don’t feel like waiting for your shower to get hot? Grab 10 bucks, an extra large pair of sunglasses and drive your ass over to Bay Island. Best part is, you don’t have to change your underwear or get out of the car. Bay Island is a little drive-thru breakfast hut on Archer located right across from Chili’s in the Butler Plaza. Grab a smoothie to replenish yourself or soak up those overpriced Cantina shots with bacon, egg and cheese on whatever type of bagel you want. Except for like, blueberry and sundried tomato…don’t be a dick. Each morning is a different special to help save you a few dollars.

Gyt’s Pick – Peach Valley
After an evening together filled with all sorts of stimulating activities, you and your date are probably going to be pretty hungry in the morning. If you’re not in a rush and you don’t have much to cook with at your place, it’s always nice to take your lady out to breakfast.
Nothing satisfies that morning hunger than a traditional diner like Peach Valley. The place has all the classics you’d want in the morning, such as eggs, breakfast sandwiches, chicken and waffles, you name it. Going to a sit-down breakfast in the morning tells your date “After last night, you still haven’t bored and exhausted me to the point that I can’t enjoy your company.” That’s big, much like the omelets served at Peach Valley. Make sure to start off with the apple fritters, deep fried apple slices served with yogurt for dipping. They’re sweet and delicious and the excellent food to share in the morning.
On your way out, if you’re a fan of sauces, pick up a bottle of the peach onion hot sauce they sell at the front. Tis the dankness.
Luke’s pick – East End Eatery
The East End Eatery sits in the outskirts of Gainesville. This quaint breakfast cottage welcomes me in with warming arms. Continuing the Gainesville tradition of wacky decorations upheld by such legendary dining halls as Satchel’s and Ivey’s, the East End Eatery gives both the eyes and my underprivileged belly, something to munch on.
Baskets hang from the ceiling and a shelf of board games calls out my name. Upon seating, I notice the simplicity of the Eatery. The menu is one page about the size of an iPad and can’t house more than 20 items. I can respect any restaurant that simplifies choices my ADHD infested brain must peruse through. I order a simple breakfast and the Eatery delivers. Simple choices, a welcoming vibe, and the comfort of common breakfast food places the East End Eatery on my go-to hangover breakfast list. Check it out next time you want to escape the health horrors of a McGriddle or recover after a night of one too many glasses of merlot.
Matt’s Pick – Bagels and Noodles
It’s Sunday morning and Chick-Fil-A is closed. Your life is over, right?
Wrong.
More times than I probably should, I’ve found myself moseying on over to Bagels and Noodles on University Ave. One of the very special specs of B&N is the entranceway. There happens to be a 6 inch gap between the sidewalk and the inside tile of the joint where, after a full hour of watching, 99% of people walking in trip and pretend like nothing happened. Yeah, well guess what, I saw you trip and it was really embarrassing so don’t act like nothing happened. Besides these obviously wise words, this place kills the food game. I personally have yet to go wrong with their “Traditional Dishes” which are home fries smothered in any cheese with an egg on top with or without meat (depending on your appetite) and a nice cup of coffee to compliment my royalty breakfast.
The meal is cheap for the amount of food you’re getting, so for two, expect to spend around $18 to skip lunch and potentially end up watching Marley and Me on your couch in the rain until it’s time for dinner/you go buy a puppy and don’t ever let it go.
